In Zambia today, Counseling is a word that is often misused and misunderstood. Most people have the idea of counseling as one person talking and giving advice while the other person passively listens and absorbs their words. Although that is appropriate and even necessary at times, the act of giving counsel is very much an active process for both counselor and counselee. The best feature of good counseling is not the information passed from one person to another but rather the relationship between the Counselor and Counselee. What happens to enhance or disrupt that relationship will often determine whether the information exchanged is even received or that counseling has been effective.
